Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) have secured approval for six biomedical research projects under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) specialised grant initiative of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The projects will have researchers from IMS, the Institute of Science (IoS), along with engineering departments at BHU. The combined funding for all six projects sanctioned is Rs 15 crore. The grants will offer support to large-scale cohort studies, biomarker research, precision clinical trials, and advanced laboratory investigations.
The six projects will focus on healthcare challenges, which include the early diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), paediatric septic shock, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis, and precision oncology for renal cell carcinoma
Underlining BHU’s approach towards research, Manoj Pandey, dean of research at IMS, said, “Our ultimate goal is to maximize extramural funding and build a robust, facilitative research ecosystem in the university to elevate our institutional ranking in the long run and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.”
SN Sankhwar, director at IMS, added that all six ICMR grants will reflect the institute’s commitment to medical research and patient care.
Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, BHU director, described the approval as an important milestone for medical research efforts. He said that BHU is working towards advancing medical sciences while improving patient healthcare infrastructure.
The funding has come when BHU researchers are actively involved in research activities. During the last six months, the researchers have submitted more than 200 project proposals to different funding agencies. Faculty members at BHU are also being encouraged to address critical healthcare needs.
Below are the details of the six ICMR projects that have received funding.
