Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has joined hands with Jindal Steel to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) that is focused on high-strength, value-added, and value-engineered steel products and applications. The institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up the centre on the IIT Hyderabad campus.
The centre proposed will focus on developing advanced steel applications for infrastructure, construction, engineering and other strategic sectors. The initiative will be launched with the joint efforts of IIT Hyderabad’s research capabilities and Jindal Steel’s industrial and manufacturing expertise.
Speaking on the partnership, B S Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “This Centre of Excellence strengthens IITH’s role in promoting advanced steel solutions across India’s engineering, infrastructure and industrial sectors. We look forward to an impactful partnership with Jindal Steel.” He added that the centre will connect with the faculty and students to develop real-world applications.
Jindal Steel will fund the construction of the physical centre at IIT Hyderabad. This facility will serve as a platform for application development, training, technical demonstrations, and industry collaboration along with knowledge transfer.
The CoE will explore various applications across bridges, buildings, large-diameter pipes and penstocks. It will also focus on heavy machinery, power plants, defence, refineries, transportation and heavy engineering.
The research centre will work with designers, consultants, engineers, fabricators, equipment manufacturers and project developers to identify the areas where advanced steel grades can be used.
Partnering with IIT Hyderabad, V R Sharma, managing director, Jindal Steel, said, “By combining IITH’s technical capabilities with Jindal Steel’s manufacturing, metallurgical and engineering expertise, the Centre will demonstrate solutions that are stronger, lighter, faster and more efficient across a wide range of applications. Our goal is to accelerate their adoption in real-world projects.”
The partnership will also cover workshops, academic modules, industry-academia training programmes, student internships and placements, and other industry engagement activities. The centre will collaborate with companies, government bodies and end users to support technical assessments.
