The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has introduced a new BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology programme to support aerospace education. The new aerospace course can be opted by Class 12 qualified students or equivalent, including diploma holders, with no cap on enrolment and no requirement for IIT-JEE qualification.
As per the official IIT Madras press release, the programme is designed for undergraduate students and will be offered online to equip learners with relevant analysis and design capabilities in aeronautics, space systems, and allied sectors.
Students can complete the programme at their own pace, making it suitable for working professionals, students pursuing another degree, or those seeking a primary UG qualification. The exams will be conducted on Sundays, with a mix of centre-based and online proctored assessments.
Learners can progress at a flexible pace within defined milestones, making it suitable for working professionals, students pursuing another degree, or those seeking a primary UG qualification.
IIT Madras had previously launched its first online degree in BS Data Science, which is widely popular among students. The total fee for the BS degree programme is under Rs 4 lakh. Notably, IIT Madras extends 50%–75% fee waivers for students from lower-income backgrounds,
As per the official IIT Madras statement, the BS-level course focuses on designing a complete aircraft or spacecraft, for industrial research and development roles, including higher education for students with a blend of theoretical learning and hands-on training.
The institute may invite top diploma performers for on-campus preparation, with high scorers eligible to join MS programmes, without Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores, as per prescribed CGPA criteria.
The core theory courses will be delivered through recorded lectures by expert faculty, supported by live interactive tutorial sessions and online discussion forums, the IIT Madras statement said.
While announcing the course launch on IITM campus today, the director V Kamakoti said: “Aeronautics and space technology are exponentially growing sectors that need specialised man power for employment. This BS programme is yet another effort taken by IIT Madras to democratise opportunity for all to enter these sectors.”
“Laboratory courses conducted on the IIT Madras campus provide exposure to advanced experimental facilities, including wind tunnels and mechanical testing. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP), the programme offers multiple exit options at the foundation, diploma and BS degree levels, allowing learners to tailor their pathway based on skills and career goals,” the official IIT Madras statement adds.
Additionally, the programme will address skill gaps in sectors such as unmanned aerial vehicles, civil aviation and space technologies. IIT Madras will offer placement and internship support through the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) to further strengthen employability outcomes for students.
