The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). One with Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and the other two with industry partners namely M/s Compliance Kart Pvt. Ltd. and M/s Trayambhu Tech Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
IIT Roorkee has collaborated under the programme ‘Carbon Credits Initiation and Its Benefits for Sustainable Agriculture in Uttar Pradesh’. This is a five-year-long initiative in which the government, IIT Roorkee and industry partners will participate together so that farmers adopt sustainable farming practices and also benefit from carbon credit opportunities.
The partnership will focus on improving soil health, saving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using irrigation efficiently, promoting agroforestry and protecting biodiversity. It will also help Indian farmers to participate in carbon markets and find new sources of income.
Speaking about the partnership, T M Tripathi, director, Agriculture & Allied Services, Government of Uttar Pradesh, said, “By bringing together government, academia and industry, the initiative will help create new opportunities for farmers while strengthening climate resilience, sustainable resource management and environmentally responsible agricultural development across the State.”
IIT Roorkee will support project reviews, monitoring, research, quality checks and training. It will also take a look at the digital monitoring, reporting and verification system used to track the programme.
The Carbon Credits Initiation and Its Benefits for Sustainable Agriculture programme will first cover Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts. It might then expand to other parts of Uttar Pradesh, depending on the approvals and performance.
Commenting on the commitment of the institution, KK Pant, IIT Roorkee director, said, “These partnerships bring together government, academia and industry to develop a credible carbon-credit ecosystem that can advance sustainable agriculture, strengthen climate resilience and create new opportunities for farmers.”
The partnership will combine technology, scientific knowledge and field-level work to promote sustainable farming. Moreover, the initiative will also connect climate with practical benefits for farmers.
