The Karnataka government has introduced a 7.5 percent special horizontal reservation for students from rural government schools seeking admission to professional courses. This provision has been announced under the new ‘Vidyarthi Sahayahastha’ initiative and will give better access to higher education for students from rural areas.
D K Shivakumar, chief minister, announced this initiative while addressing the public during the 80th Independence day celebrations in Bengaluru, according to a post on X. Under the scheme, students who have studied from class 1 to class 10 in government schools located in rural areas of Karnataka will be eligible for this special reservation.
Calling it "Your Era: A New Era," Shivakumar said that the government is already introducing several new programmes to help young people gain new skills and access better opportunities to build a successful future. This initiative will help students prepare for careers in India and abroad.
The school education and literacy department clarifies that the 7.5 percent reservation will not create an additional quota. Instead, it will be allocated from the existing 15 percent rural reservation quota of the state.
The special horizontal reservation will provide eligible students with greater representation in admissions to professional courses. The government has positioned the initiative as a step towards expanding educational opportunities for rural government schools in Karnataka.
The reservation will apply to professional courses, including medical and engineering programmes. Eligible students will therefore be able to benefit from the provision while getting admission to these courses under the applicable reservation framework.
However, the government has not yet provided details on when the provision will come into effect. Information regarding the admission procedure, required documents and other eligibility conditions is also awaited. Further official guidelines will clarify how the reservation will be implemented.
The Karnataka education department will release the information about the scheme in the upcoming weeks. It will contain information about the admission procedure, required documents, and other eligibility details. The guidelines will contain further details on how the reservation will be implemented.
Both the students and their parents must keep an eye on further official notifications for the implementation process and date. Karnataka has also introduced initiatives for students to learn artificial intelligence (AI) and coding education, which include AI learning from class 6 and free coding gurukul classes.
