The Karnataka government is in the process of introducing spoken English classes in 1,919 schools across the state. These spoken English sessions will be taught to students from class 1 to class 10. This initiative will help government school students improve their communication skills and speak English with confidence.
Madhu Bangarappa, minister of primary and secondary education, shared this in a post on a social media platform. This spoken English initiative will be implemented in only selected Karnataka government schools like Public Schools (KPS), PM SHRI KPS schools, along with their affiliated unit schools.
The initiative will also be introduced in certain schools that offer bilingual education.
The classes shall be conducted by guest teachers who are appointed to teach spoken English. The government has released Rs 19.67 crore for the spoken English initiative. Instead of teaching English only through textbooks and regular lessons, the initiative will allow students to practise speaking and develop their communication skills.
The initiative will help children use English in daily communication. Bangarappa said, “Learning English merely as a language subject is not enough; students must also learn to speak it fluently to face today's global challenges.”
The classes will help students practise speaking English and become more confident. The initiative will teach practical communication skills rather than just grammar and textbook lessons. The Spoken English training program will be implemented in three stages. Stage one will cover classes 1 to 3, stage two will cater to students in classes 4 to 7 and finally stage three will include classes 8 to 10
