Ladakh’s first medical college will start operating fully functional from the academic year 2027-28. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved one-time relaxation for the completion of the infrastructure. Union Territory administration will get time for the staff selection process while the medical college’s construction continues.
The proposed Government Medical College (GMC) will be located at Stipuk Pharka in Leh. According to PTI, the approval allows the administration to begin staggered recruitment for various posts before 80% of the college's infrastructure is completed, as stated in the letter dated October 13, 2026.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena praised the decision and thanked Union Health Minister J P Nadda for considering his request for a relaxation. He stated that the approval would allow the administration to begin recruitment without having to wait for the infrastructure work to be completed at the specified level.

According to PTI, the Department of Expenditure has reviewed the proposal and also agreed to the relaxation due to certain conditions.
“The 103 posts were sanctioned through a Department of Expenditure” as per the letter dated on November 27, 2024. According to the ministry's communication, recruitment will take place in phases based on academic requirements beginning with the academic year 2027-28.
Saxena welcomed the decision, stating that the relaxation would allow the administration to begin "staggered, preparatory recruitment for 103 sanctioned regular posts" as the academic infrastructure is built.
The administration will recruit all the vacant positions following the recruitment rules. All interim arrangements until the permanent facilities are operational will be temporary.

The region’s healthcare workforce and access to medical services will be strengthened by the initiative. The establishment of a medical college is expected to support the long-term development of healthcare services in the Union Territory. Saxena also added that the medical college should be fully functional and welcome its first batch in the 2027-28 academic session.
Once the permanent facilities are ready, the interim arrangements must be shifted to the designated infrastructure, and the Department of Expenditure must be informed of the transition.
The approval is intended to help the administration advance recruitment and operational preparations alongside construction, supporting the planned launch of Ladakh’s first medical college.
