NIAS Bengaluru announces workshop on 'Climate Change, Civil Society and Peace' for young research scholars

The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) is inviting young scholars and students to participate in a workshop on “Climate Change, Civil Society and Gender” on September 29, 2026. The organisers have also asked interested participants to submit abstracts by September 7, and the selected participants will be intimated by September 10.

The workshop is organised under the NIAS Youth Network, “The Grass Roots”, which is focused on climate change, civil society and peace-related issues. It will allow young researchers to explore the role of civil society and gender in responding to climate change.

Participants can then develop case studies on the role of women in addressing climate change-related challenges and submit by October 1. The workshop will be held at the NIAS Bengaluru campus. Accommodation will be provided at the NIAS Guest House for outstation participants. Outstation participants will also be reimbursed for travel expenses

NIAS workshop focus

The focus of the workshop will be on the following themes:

• Water Security, Drought and Women
• Floods, Displacement and Community Resilience
• Heatwaves, Health and Women
• Climate-induced Migration, Care Work and Household Vulnerability
• Biodiversity, Forest Resources and Indigenous Women
• Women-led Climate Adaptation and Civil Society Responses

Outputs from these shall be published in The Green Ribbon, the C3SP initiative’s monthly magazine

Women’s role in climate action

The event is part of the NIAS Climate Change, Civil Society & Peace in South Asia (C3SP) Initiative, which works on the themes of Climate Change, Civil Society and Peace. The initiative also publishes a monthly magazine, The Green Ribbon, which showcases the discussions and research related to these areas.

NIAS has previously conducted workshops and field studies with young scholars from different institutions participating. The organisers have also requested institutions and faculty members to circulate the workshop details among students so that interested candidates can take part.

Participants submitting the abstracts should be 400 to 500 words. The final essay with the case study should be around 3000 to 4000 words. Interested students or scholars under the age of 30 can send their abstract before the deadline ends.

Case study topics

The following are topics on which case studies can be submitted:

• How is climate change affecting fisherwomen and their livelihoods?
• How are women farmers responding to drought, changing rainfall or other climate stresses? 
• How are women experiencing and responding to climate-induced migration or displacement? 
• What role are women playing in community responses to floods, heatwaves or water scarcity?
• What are women-led civil society organisations doing to address climate change and its impacts?
• How are civil society organisations working with women and affected communities on climate adaptation?
• What lessons emerge from women-led or community-led climate action?
