Sheffield Hallam University in the UK has signed and renewed three agreements with Indian higher education institutions to explore academic collaboration, research and student mobility between the two countries.
‘The collaborations include Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai, the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education (IFHE) in Hyderabad, and the International Institute of Sports and Management (IISM) in Mumbai.
The proposed collaborations will cover joint research, student and staff exchanges, academic progression pathways, programme development and knowledge exchange. The initiative comes amid efforts by India and the UK to strengthen educational and economic ties following the implementation of their free trade agreement (FTA) in July 2026.
Sheffield Hallam University’s vice-chancellor Liz Mossop said the partnerships would help both countries build stronger academic connections. She said the university aimed to create “lasting benefits for students, staff and communities in both countries” by collaborating in education, research and innovation.
The university has renewed its existing agreement with IFHE to explore study-abroad opportunities, summer schools, virtual engagement and academic progression routes through Sheffield Business School. The collaboration will explore opportunities in sports management, sports science, applied research, sports engineering and industry engagement.
It has also renewed the agreement with IISM for strengthening their existing relationship between the institutions. The collaboration will explore opportunities in sports management, sports science, applied research, sports engineering and industry engagement.
The new agreement with Somaiya Vidyavihar University will provide a framework for discussions on joint research, student and staff exchanges, academic progression and joint programme development. Nearly 200 representatives participated in the programme to develop partnerships with Indian universities, businesses and other institutions.
Sheffield Hallam University said the next phase would focus on turning the agreements into practical initiatives for students, academics and researchers in India and the UK.
