The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has launched the School of Analytics and AI. It is a new academic initiative that focuses on technology, society, and sustainability. The new school will offer two academic programmes, including a master’s in analytics and a bachelor’s in analytics and sustainability.
In collaboration with Tata Trusts, TISS is considering naming the school as 'Ratan Tata School of Analytics' to recognise the late industrialist’s dedication to ethical technology, innovation, and sustainable development.
The School of Analytics and AI has faculty from social sciences, science, technology and mathematics. The school aims to mix technical expertise with a better understanding of sustainability and social issues.

TISS School of Analytics and AI has developed from the Labour Market Research Facility under TISS’s School of Management and Labour Studies. The school is built with an academic focus covering two areas, namely Artificial Intelligence and Society and Sustainability Transitions.
The School of Analytics and AI has evolved from the Labour Market Research Facility under TISS’s School of Management and Labour Studies. It will build on the institute’s work in research and policy.
According to the TISS Mumbai press release, “The school envisions cultivating a knowledge ecology that situates science and technology within the socio-political realities of the Global South, emphasizing inclusive innovation, ethical AI, and equitable development pathways.”
The School of Analytics and AI plans to work on research, policy support and capacity building, and also develop a global centre in these areas. The work areas include AI governance and sustainability metrics, with government, industries and agencies supporting the use of technology.
The school also has initiatives to introduce executive education programmes and develop open-access data platforms that support evidence-based policymaking. International collaborations are also proposed in areas such as climate analytics, digital transformation, and urban informality.
The Global Colloquium on “AI, Digital Technologies, and Society” was hosted by TISS from May 12 to 15, after which the above announcement of this new school came. The institute said the new school will integrate data-based research with social responsibility and focus on practical solution building for different communities.
