UGC flags 32 fake universities across India; Delhi tops the list with 12
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a state-wise list of 32 fake universities functioning across India as of February 2026. It warned students that degrees awarded by these institutions are neither recognised nor valid for higher education or employment.
As per the latest UGC fake universities list, Delhi has the highest number of fake universities with 12 institutions listed, followed by Uttar Pradesh with four. Several other states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and West Bengal, have two fake institutions each.
The UGC has written to the higher education departments and principal secretaries of the respective state governments, urging them to initiate appropriate action against these universities.
As per the UGC Act, 1956, degrees can be awarded only by universities established through a Central Act, State Act, or Provisional Act, or by institutions specifically empowered to confer degrees.
The UGC conducts inspections periodically to verify the recognition status of institutions and flags a list of fake universities on the official website, ugc.ac.in, to help students avoid taking admission in such institutions. In October 2025, the UGC listed 22 fake universities.
