The University Grants Commission (UGC) has shared an official notification regarding the allied and healthcare degrees that will fall under the regulatory purview of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) from the academic year 2026 to 27.
The latest notification by UGC was shared after communications were issued by NCAHP and the government on degree nomenclature, along with other requirements for allied and healthcare programmes.
The official statement reads, “The notification constitutes the Fifth Amendment to the said UGC Notification and shall come into force from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.”
This will formally bring the Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) and Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degrees within the regulatory framework of NCAHP. NCAHP issues regulations for the education and professional standards of the allied and healthcare professions.

According to the NCAHP communication in the government letter, from the 2026 to 27 academic session, Master of Physiotherapy and Master of Occupational Therapy degrees will no longer be awarded as general degrees. Instead, the degree certificate will have the specific specialisation studied by the student written on it.
This change shall be applied to those students who take admission from the 2026 to 27 academic year and thereafter. Those who have taken admission before the 2026 to 27 session might get their MPT and MOT degrees based on the earlier UGC notification.
The government communication also says that the change has been issued only after it was approved by the competent authority. The latest UGC notification has aligned the degree names and academic requirements for allied and healthcare programmes with NCAHP regulations.
From this academic year, universities and colleges that offer these courses will have to update the degree names and other requirements while giving admission to students and then awarding degrees.
