The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced ‘Unnati’ (Unified Network for Nurturing Academic Training and Innovations) to improve the quality of teacher training and classroom learning. The initiative uses technology-based monitoring to ensure that training reaches teachers effectively and its key learnings are applied in classrooms.
Under the initiative, a five-day training programme will be conducted for primary school teachers and shiksha mitras. The programme will focus on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) and the effective use of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks.
Sandeep Singh, minister of state for basic education, said the government will make teacher training more effective and ensure that improved teacher capacity contributes directly to children’s learning outcomes. He also added that teachers are being trained to adapt curriculum, classroom activities and teaching methods to meet the students’ learning levels and classroom requirements.
The Unnati system has been designed to reduce the loss of training quality as it reaches teachers. This refers to the weakening of key concepts, pedagogical understanding, and teaching practices as training is passed from one level to another. Online supervision under Unnati is intended to help maintain the quality and consistency of training across batches.
Officials from the state project office, along with experts and consultants, will monitor training sessions through video conferencing. To support online supervision, each training hall will be equipped with a high-resolution webcam, microphone or sound system and a high-speed internet connection.
A separate online link will be created for every training batch. The Block Education Officer (BEO) will coordinate the process and generate the link two days before the training begins.
Through Unnati, the government plans to improve teachers’ subject knowledge and teaching skills while improving the implementation of FLN and NCERT-based learning in primary classrooms. The technology-enabled monitoring system is expected to provide greater oversight of training quality and help ensure that teachers receive consistent and practical support.
