The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will host a three-day ‘Lab Leadership’ course on research group leadership in biological sciences. The course will be held from November 17 to 19, 2026. The first two days of the course will be held at TIFR in Mumbai and the third day at IIT Bombay.
The event will be supported by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). The ‘Lab Leadership’ course will focus on the skills that are required to manage research teams and also build an effective working environment.
The course will be suitable for researchers who are looking to learn leadership responsibilities or are already leading research teams. Researchers may have strong skills in experiments, data analysis and critical thinking, but taking responsibility for a research group will require skills in managing teams, communicating clearly and making decisions.

The three-day programme will help in finding out how researchers can apply their analytical and problem-solving skills to manage people, ideas and research teams. It will also make use of concepts from psychology, social sciences, behavioural science and management.
Participants will learn how to build effective teams by managing different working styles within a research space. The course will also help in learning leadership practices that can help researchers create both collaborative and independent research environments.
Researchers who are interested in developing their skills in research groups will be able to apply for the course by following the official application process. A total of twenty participants will be selected for the course depending on their academic and research experience. The selection will be based on factors like faculty experience, research funding, and publication records.
