Bihar government revises stipend for PG medical students; raises third-year pay by Rs 12,980

The Bihar government has increased the monthly stipend for postgraduate (PG) medical students in the state. The revised rates will be effective from January 1, 2026. The move will provide greater financial support to students who are pursuing postgraduate medical education in Bihar, reports NDTV Education.

Nishant Kumar, the Bihar Health Minister, said, “PG students who play an active role in patient treatment and hospital services under the supervision of senior doctors will receive better financial support. This will also encourage quality human resources in the field of medical education." 

Under the revised structure, first-year postgraduate medical students will get a monthly stipend of Rs 92,800, which has increased from Rs 82,000. The stipend for second-year students has increased from Rs 90,200 to Rs 1,02,000. Similarly, the third-year postgraduate medical students will now get Rs 1,12,200 per month, which was earlier Rs 99,220.

PG medical stipend across three years

Several concerns were raised by medical interns and students in different states in India over stipend amount and working conditions. The recent protests have highlighted differences in the stipends that were offered to medical trainees across states, long working hours and the workload faced by medical trainees.

This decision to raise the stipend has come while protests are still ongoing. According to NDTV Education, the Bihar government had earlier announced a revision of the monthly stipend for MBBS interns in government medical colleges from Rs 20,000 to Rs 27,000.

The revised amount was also applicable for Foreign Medical Graduate interns. Similar announcements were made regarding stipend raises for dental and other medical streams. The latest increase will include all three years under postgraduate medical training. The first-year stipend for PG students has increased by Rs 10,800, while second-year students will now get Rs 11,800 more each month. For third-year students, the increase is Rs 12,980 per month.
