The Karnataka government has sent show-cause notices to as many as 180 government school teachers in the state’s Chikkaballapur district on September 15, 2026. NDTV Education reported, these notices were sent after it was found that some Class 7 students were facing issues with basic mathematics and Kannada alphabets,.
Chikkaballapur Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pradeep Eshwar conducted surprise inspections at Karnataka government primary schools in his constituency. During the inspections, it was reported that few Class 7 students were not able to give answers to simple addition and subtraction problems or even write basic Kannada alphabets.
The learning of Class 7 students was reviewed after Eshwar had written to the education authorities on September 4. The show cause notices were sent from the Office of the Block Education Officer, Chikkaballapura in Karnataka.

After the MLA’s communication, Education Coordinators, Block Resource Persons (BRPs) and Cluster Resource Persons (CRPs) checked how well Class 7 students had learned basic concepts in government and aided primary schools across Chikkaballapura taluk, NDTV Education reported.
The inspections found that students were found to be behind the actual learning levels. The education department of Karnataka have received a list of the students and the teachers who had taught them.
The teachers were also asked to explain why the students could not get the minimum expected learning levels. The notice also says that action might be taken against the teachers under the prescribed rules after listening to their explanations.
The department said that various government schemes had been introduced to improve students’ learning outcomes. Since the students do not meet the minimum learning requirements, this means they are academically behind and the objectives of these programmes are not fulfilled.
The show-cause notices therefore require teachers to explain before any action is considered. Further actions will only be taken if the teachers fail to explain the reasons behind the performance of the students, along with the department’s review.
