The Sikkim government has introduced ‘AI-FunZone’, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based learning programme, across 71 government schools in the state. This programme will improve the students’ foundational skills in reading, language proficiency and Mathematics.
The AI-FunZone programme has already started to roll out in schools across the Khamdong, Nandok and Martam blocks of Gangtok district. This initiative will be applicable to students of Classes 3 to 5.
The learning support will be available in three languages: English, Nepali and Mathematics. The state Education department will implement the programme in collaboration with the EkStep Foundation under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was signed in April, 2026.

Under the programme, students will attend a one-hour AI-FunZone session during regular school hours. They will be able to use computers or shared digital devices for designed for their short practice activities based on their learning needs.
The AI system will also be used to check the performance of the students and identify specific areas where they might need extra support. The system can listen to students as they read and identify any difficulties in their speech. For Mathematics, the system can review the mistakes made by students and then suggest practice activities.
The programme will give the students regular opportunities to practise basic concepts and also allow them to be a part of the learning activities that can be adjusted according to individual performance.

The Education Department of Sikkim has said that AI will just be a support system in classroom teaching rather than replacing teachers. Teachers will continue to teach lessons, and AI will just be sharing additional information on students’ learning levels and areas that require attention.
The AI-FunZone programme will have a real-time dashboard which will allow teachers to monitor the progress of individual students. This data can help teachers assess which students need follow-up or additional classroom support and targeted practice sessions.
According to the department, around 300 educational personnel from the three blocks have already undergone training for the programme. Their training will support the introduction of AI-FunZone in all participating schools.
